The old Expanded Universe—now rebranded as Legends—gave us some genuinely terrifying antagonists that many fans argue surpassed what we saw on screen in the recent films. While Kylo Ren had his moments of intensity, several villains from the Legends novels created more complex, menacing, and memorable threats to the galaxy. These characters had time to develop across multiple books, making their motivations and powers feel earned rather than rushed through a trilogy.

What makes this comparison so interesting to Star Wars fans is how it highlights the different storytelling opportunities between movies and novels. Legends authors had space to explore dark side users with intricate backstories, genuine philosophical conflicts, and consequences that rippled across entire storylines. Some of these villains commanded such presence that fans still consider them the “real” continuation of Star Wars lore, even after Disney’s pivot to the sequel trilogy.

For gamers specifically, this matters because several of these Legends villains have influenced how Star Wars games portray antagonists—from their tactical intelligence to their force abilities. If you’re curious which book-bound dark siders outshined the Ren character, the full breakdown explores what made them more compelling from a storytelling perspective. It’s a great reminder of why many fans remain passionate about Legends content and continue hoping for its return in games, shows, or other media.
